Sergej Eisenstein

Famous is this fragment of the movie ‘Potjomkin’ of director Sergej Eisenstein (born in Riga, Latvia). The movie, which dates from 1925, tells the story of one of the episodes of the Russian Revolution (1905). The close-ups of suffering, frightful people and soldiers’ boots on the Odessa steps had such a big impact that some parts of the film outside the USSR provoked clashes with the police because people thought they were watching a newsreel instead of a film. The stairs in the movie are still to be found in the original state in Odessa.
