Estonia invests in windturbines
According to the report from WWF, Estonia ranks ninth in terms of ecological footprint per capital, United Arab Emirates is the country with the biggest ecological footprint, followed by the United States, Kuwait, Denmark, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Norway. Estonia’s ecological footprint has been among the biggest in the world during previous years as well. This is due to the usage of oil shale in producing electricity. Because of this, and because of the plans of the Baltic states to shut down the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant in 2009, the Development Funds invests in OU Goliath Wind, a company that develops an innovative wind turbine in Estonia.
Margus Dintshenko of Goliath Wind explains: "Our objective is to invent wind turbines that are lighter, more durable and the capacity of which would start from 1.5 Megawatts and which would provide electricity at 15-20% lower prices than the current wind turbines do.” As a result of the investment by the Development Fund, the international business project will be executed in Estonia. The Estonian Development Fund has been established by the Riigikogu in order to monitor the future and to invest in innovative and ambitious technology enterprises in Estonia.
