Shrovetide Carnival Carnival
The Shrovetide Carnival Carnival is mostly associated with Roman Catholic. The world's longest carnival celebration is held in Brazil, but many regions worldwide have large, popular celebrations, such as Slovenia. The Slovenian countryside displays a variety of disguised groups and individual characters among which the most popular and characteristic is the Kurent, a monstrous and demon-like, fluffy figure.

Kurenti are magical creatures from the other world, who visit all major events throughout the country, members of parliament, the president and mayors, trying to banish the winter and announce the arrival of the spring, fertility, and new life with loud noise and dancing. The origin of the Kurent is a mystery. Dressed in a sheep-skin costume and a fearsome mask he shakes his bells and sticks all over town while encouraging inebriation and joy. All this in the name of scaring off the evil winter spirits. In the towns of Cerknica and Ptuj, the locals find it to be their duty to follow his ways.
