Potjomkin
This fragment of the movie ‘Potjomkin’ of director Sergej Eisenstein is famous. The movie, that dates from 1925, tells the story of one of the episodes of the Russian Revolution (1905). The RSDAP (Russian party that wanted more freedom for the people) organized a big rebellion on the black fleet, but before that could even happen, the crew on the Potjomkin ship revolted and took over the ship. The government sent ships to reconquer the Potjomkin, but these ships joined the rebelling crew of the Potjomkin. Altogether, they fled to Rumania and were given back to the authorities. This rebellion undermined the position of the tsarist regime. The later Soviet-regime used the rebellion as propaganda and asked Eisenstein to make a movie about it for the 10th anniversary of the October Revolution (1917). It was played under the direct control of Stalin.
The close-ups of suffering, frightful people and soldiers’ boots on the Odessa steps had such a big impact that some parts of the film outside the USSR provoked clashes with the police because people thought they were watching a newsreel instead of a film. Through the use of camera, perspective and editing, Eistenstein tried to portray the feeling of suppression
