
Ecological Initiative "Belaya Rus"
Ecological Initiative "Belaya Rus" is a Belarusian non-governmental and non-profit organization. Their mission is: implementation of the principles of sustainable development and working out a concept that ensures respect for the limited capacity of natural resources, while meeting social and cultural requirements and making use of economic development and its mechanisms. They work on local sustainability, alternative energy, environmental information dissemination, and environmental education. The main areas of activities are: local sustainability, effectively lobbying of decision-makers, involving the public in the whole process and improving public awareness, environmental information and public participation, environmental awareness rising campaigns; sustainable agriculture; energy saving and waste management.”
Part of their job is to be actively involved in the discussion of environmental legislation and international environmental agreement implementation as a member of the "National Environmental Consultative Council of NGOs and try to spread their ideas around Belarus. They did this in 1999-2001, together with the Danish Organization for Renewable Energy in the project ‘Developing Environmental Awareness in Belarus’. A key element of this project was the educational bus tour around Belarus to campaign at schools about waste separation, energy saving and all kinds of other ‘green’ and ‘energy’ related topics.
