Wekerle Estate (1908-)
This 'Hungarian Garden Suburb' was built to house more than 20,000 lower middle class public servants. It was built to provide for all their needs. The idea back in 1908 was to build a complete and self-contained suburban housing estate. The plan was realized, not only with front and back gardens, but also with entrance gates, a ceremonial inner square and wonderful architecture. The style is called Translyvanian and features steeple-like wooden roofs. Nowadays, this estate still acts as a small town in the middle of the middle of Budapest, where everyone lives in harmony with nature and neighbours.
