In the year 2000 an investigation was executed among the Austrian population about ecologically built houses. A builders’ merchant chain then reported that 64% of the population preferred ecological insulation materials, but the market only offered 4,6% ecological materials. Environmentalists warned that in 20 years’ time, the disposal of a demolished house would be more expensive than the construction of a new one.
Criteria like ecological construction methods and energy efficiency quickly became well-established standards in Vienna's public housing practice. Due to that, a thousand apartments will be created in Vienna’s largest urban redevelopment area, called Eurogate, with the help of low-energy. Three-hundred of these houses will be developed by BAI. BAI is specialized in non-standard objects that are functional as well aesthetic. It realizes housing that is about efficient long-term usage of resources that will develop the city. This Viennese project will represent Europe's biggest housing estate with a passive house standard.
